Happy New Year! 2011, The Year of the Sponge?

Then don’t make one this year. As for me, I’ve had the same goal the last few years: try and finish that damn book pile. Well! This is the year I’m going to do it. I figure with 52 weeks in a year, the most I can possibly read in a year is 52 books. That seems reasonable. Since I only have less than half that amount that I need to read, I can totally do this!
And I’ve declared 2011 the year of the sponge, because I’m going to soak up as much pop culture as I can possibly take. So in addition to my book pile, I’ve compiled a list of movies that I’m going to watch this year with one caveat: they will be disturbing-ass movies. I’ve been dodging Requiem for a Dream for years because it’s supposed to be incredibly depressing (but great), and I’ve also said no to several movies because I found the premise to be too messed up and gory for me. Not this year! I’ve lined up Salo, Irreversible, and I Spit on Your Grave. I don’t really know why I’m doing this to myself.
And yes readers, you will get a review. I think I enjoy writing about these movies more than actually watching them. Visitor Q was a nightmare to watch, because it was graphic and bizarre, but was incredibly fun to write about because…I didn’t know where to start. I had a wealth of weirdness to talk about. Do I talk about the father soliciting his daughter for sex? The heroin addicted mother who squirts breast milk all over the kitchen floor? Or the father (again) who cannot be a news anchor anymore after being raped by a microphone? Did I mention he has sex with a corpse too? I need to top this movie this year and if what I’ve read is true, I think Salo is the one to do it. If not that, then Caligula.
So Happy New Year! Wish you all the best!
